Notice on holding academic lectures by Professor Yuan XiaoCong

At the invitation of the school of electronic engineering, the office of discipline construction and the scientific research department of our university, Professor Yuan XiaoCong of Shenzhen University gave an online academic lecture on December 21 for teachers and students of relevant research directions in our university. Optical vortex: Science and Application

Abstract of the report:

The main content of this report is a review article to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the birth of optical vorticity (OV). It introduces the basic theory, scientific connotation, technological development and corresponding applications of optical vortex. Firstly, we review the origin of orbital angular momentum (OAM) and present two typical optical vortices including optical singularities: orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams and cylindrical vector beams (CVBS), and introduce the correlation between them. Then, we introduce the transverse spin and introduce the optical sigmeron, which is a topological optical spin distribution formed by the coupling of light spin and orbital angular momentum. As for the technology and application of OV, we mainly introduce the application of optical tweezers, optical imaging and sensing, optical communication and other fields. This paper first introduces the vortex generation and (demultiplexing) methods with different mechanisms in recent years, and reveals the development direction of optical field manipulation technology and mode multiplexing communication technology. Since the new century, due to the continuous development of vortex control technology, some new applications are emerging. We review as comprehensively as possible the various applications of OV in different disciplines. The development of OVS is a typical example of theory guiding new applications and application requirements enlightening new theories. So far, OVS is still a research hotspot, which has high theoretical research potential and application value. In conclusion, this report focuses on the basic science, key research progress and application challenges of optical vortex, and looks forward to the future development trend in this field.

Brief introduction of the reporter:

Professor Yuan XiaoCong, director of nano Photonics Research Center of Shenzhen University, distinguished professor of Yangtze River scholars, fellow of Chinese Optical Society (fcos), American Optical Society (fosa), British Physical Society (finstp) and international society of Optical Engineering (fspie). He was selected as the fifth batch of leading talents of Guangdong "Pearl River talent plan", and Elsevier was highly cited scholar in China. He has studied in King's College of London University and Cavendish Laboratory of Cambridge University, and taught in the Department of microelectronics of Nanyang Polytechnic University in Singapore and the Institute of modern optics of Nankai University. He has been engaged in basic and applied technology research for more than 20 years in the related frontier fields of optical vortices, and published more than 350 SCI papers, including science, Nature Physics, nature communications, science advances, PNAs, etc. He is now the co editor of Advanced Photonics.
